As CES gets underway, a new report from Videocardz leaks ahead of AMD’s official announcement that the chip manufacturer will be announcing not one but three new Ryzen Z2 APUs for handheld gaming consoles. Videcardz had previously reported on a leak which revealed that the Z2 chips will be powering Lenovo’s refreshed Legion Go handheld consoles, of which there will be three variants, each fitted with a different Z2 chip.
Their report today suggested that Valve will be using the most powerful variant of these chips, the Z2 Extreme, for a Steam Deck 2. However, a Valve coder named Pierre-Loup Griffais posted on BluSky soon after the report went live to clarify that Valve is, in fact, not currently (nor will be ) working on a Z2-powered console. The full post reads as follows: “There is and will be no Z2 Steam Deck. Guessing the slide was meant to say the series is meant for products like that, not announcing anything specific.”
The AMD Z2 Extreme chip has gotten a lot of hubbub of late, seeing as the SKU is based on their latest “Strix Point” architecture and uses Zen 5 cores to power it, making it quite the powerhouse that outperforms the last generation Z1 Extreme by a fair margin and is considerably more powerful than Valve’s current Steam Deck. It will likely be the chip that powers upcoming gaming handhelds from the likes of Asus, but Valve aren’t usually one to follow trends. A lack of a Steam Deck successor seems to be further evidenced by the fact that Valve has made strides in making Steam OS licensable to use by manufacturers – like Lenovo and their all-but-confirmed Legion Go S – for their handheld devices.
It’s going to be an exciting week within the tech space as CES kicks off. What are some announcements you’re looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below!
