John Hamm is back, baby! After years of doing crappy SkipTheDishes commercials, try-hard comedies, and weird podcast dramas (because that’s a thing, apparently), Don Draper is back on the television screen proper, doing what he does best—being a rich asshole with a dysfunctional family.
Allow me to introduce you to Your Friends and Neighbors, an original dramedy from Apple TV+, the streaming service no one has from the company whose overpriced phones everyone does—no, Tim Cook, I don’t want a three-month free trial to watch Seth Rogen wearing unflattering suits! Joking aside, I went into Your Friends and Neighbors, a story about a successful hedge fund manager losing his job who must then resort to stealing from his wealthy friends and neighbors to keep up with his lavish lifestyle and alimony payments, not expecting much. However, six episodes in, I’ll admit that I’m fairly impressed.

There’s a cynical sarcasm to the show’s humour that does a really good job at spotlighting the absurdity of the people who live in these wealthy bubbles. Though John Hamm’s character, Andrew Cooper, is the protagonist, the show doesn’t shy away from highlighting his character’s hypocrisies as well. Speaking of John Hamm, it’s so good to see the man back on the small screen, doing some solid acting work. All the performances are good, honestly, from Olivia Munn and Aimee Carrero, to Hoon Lee, who, in particular, is very good and has been a highlight for me playing Andrew Cooper’s wealth manager.
There’s a slickness in the show’s direction that feels properly “prestige,” but not obnoxiously so. It’s pleasant on the eyes, but keeps its focus on the story and characters. There are some pacing issues where a couple of the episodes have veered into “filler” territory, but overall, it’s been a pretty tightly-wrapped package. I’m intrigued to see where this story goes and how much of a deeper hole this fool Andrew Cooper gets himself into—dude, you worked on Wall Street, you can find another job, especially when you look like Don Draper!
