Sometimes actors are required to do the darndest things. In the case of Casey Affleck, he had to be underneath a bedsheet to play a ghost in the 2017 supernatural drama, A Ghost Story. My question is, do ya’ll really think the man stayed in costume the entire time while filming? ‘Cause a big part of me feels this is just a random dude underneath that white bedsheet.
If you didn’t know, when Casey Affleck isn’t settling sexual harassment lawsuits, the man is actually a pretty decent actor. When I saw that he and Rooney Mara were in this indie, supernatural movie about a ghost, I was intrigued. What I wasn’t expecting, however, was for Casey Affleck to be in this damn costume for ostensibly the entire movie. I also wasn’t expecting to be so moved by this movie.

I saw A Ghost Story shortly after it was released in 2017, and even after all these years, it’s a film I still think about due to how poignantly it handles themes of loss, grief, and the circular nature of time and space. Even though it has “ghost” in the title, don’t get it twisted, a horror film this is not. Yet, the final sequence of the movie is one that still haunts me to this day due to how unnerving the idea of it is.
This is a very well-written, well-executed supernatural drama, directed with thought and nuance by writer-director David Lowery, and is also a showcase of Rooney Mara’s capabilities as an actress. Casey Affleck is there, too, but if someone told me the dude was in his trailer for the entire movie playing video games, I wouldn’t be surprised.
