If you didn’t know, LeBron has been extending his record for the most consecutive double-digit regular-season games in the NBA for a while now, reaching a ridiculous 1,297 games. That streak, however, came to an end last night when the Lakers faced the Toronto Raptors—doing so in an almost poetic fashion.

LeBron has been struggling to score alongside the Great White Hopes (a.k.a. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves) after returning from an injury. Though we all knew he was going to take a backseat on the scoring end, none of us thought The King would be anywhere near having a game with less than 10 points—the man averaged just shy of 25ppg last season, after all.

Yet, since his return, he’s been struggling to hit 20 points, let alone 25. But, with the Lakers coming to play in Toronto, a city that’s been dubbed “LeBronto” because of how often James has tormented those of us here in the North, and with Luka sitting out, I for sure thought we were about to get a 30-piece from The King.

That, of course, wasn’t the case. By the time the fourth quarter was coming to an end, LeBron had shot a terrible 4-17 from the field, notching a measly eight points. At this time, while Austin Reaves had put on a clinic with 44 points and 10 assists, it wasn’t enough to put the Lakers ahead of the Raptors. With the score tied at 120-120 and five seconds left in regulation, Reaves passes the ball to LeBron. “This is it,” I thought. LeBron is going to take the last shot, hit the game-winner, while also preserving his streak. It’ll be historic.

But that’s not what happened—because that’s never what happens in moments like these with LeBron. How many times have we seen LeBron drive to the basket, clock winding down, then make the right play and kick it out to an open teammate for the win? This is what he does. This is what he has always done. And this is what he did last night as he found an open Rui Hachimura, who made the game-winning basket.

LeBron’s streak may have come to an end, but his record will likely never be broken. But you know what will never come to an end? “LeBronto.”
