If you’re ever in the mood to play a puzzle game that truly messes with your head, you need to check out Nomori. Developer Enchanted Works provided me a code, and I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was going to write about it, because, upon first glance, I just thought this was going to be another cozy game with a pretty art-style and some simple, easy puzzles. But, boy, was I wrong.
It is cozy, and its art-style is very pretty, but the puzzles are anything but simple. The game takes a lot of inspiration from Portal with how you have to transport these cute-looking cubes throughout the stages, all the while using gravity and physics to your advantage. What truly blew me away was how Enchanted Works have crafted these levels. Each of them are designed in such a way where there’s no baseline for what you would consider “up” or “down—or “left” or “right,” for that matter. Nomori pushes you to think outside the box; to think of these levels as spaces you can twist and turn at whim, reconsidering its structure and pathways while figuring out how to use gravity to help you find creative solutions.

Though the narrative is simple, there’s a charm to its Alice in Wonderland type storytelling; some of the characters are quite memorable and funny, too. That being said, some of the VO of characters — which are just vocal chirps and noises rather than spoken words — can get a little repetitive and somewhat annoying.
All in all, Nomori has been a wonderful surprise, and a game well-worth checking out. I know this fall has been ridiculous with game releases, but this is one of those hidden gems you shouldn’t miss out on.
