A free upgrade to a remaster of one of the greatest games of all time? In this economy? CD Projekt RED, what the heck are ya’ll doing? Ya’ll can’t be moving like this in the year 2026. We don’t do that here. Think about your shareholders. Think about your executives and CEO! How are they going to buy their Polish yachts now?!

In all seriousness, this is such a great move by the studio, and was easily one of the biggest highlights at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. It’s a perfect way to bring in new players and to get longtime fans like myself to jump back into the boots of Geralt. I’m so envious of anyone whose going to be playing this game for the first time; the fact that they’ll now be getting both Blood and Wine and Heart of Stone — a.k.a. some of the best DLCs in all of gaming — for free is amazing.

Personally, I don’t care that much about the visual upgrades; the fact that they’re revamping the combat system, is massive. The Witcher 3 is one of my favourite games of all time—top 10, easily. However, what keeps it from being in my top five, or even top one, is its combat. It already felt floaty, janky, and dated back in 2015, and has only gotten worse with age. I’m very curious to see what improvements they were able to make all of these years later, and to see how this new DLC, Songs of the Past, pans out.

September and October are ridiculously packed this year, but I’ll find some time to make sure I turn that Botchling into a Lubberkin.
